Street Style – AJ

As Taylor and I have mentioned before, we don’t want this blog to be about just us, we want it to be about you, too (but definitely not U2). We know you ladies have something to say about style, and we want to hear what it is. And frankly, we’re getting a little tired of our own faces as of late, and I am pretty sure that my neighbors think I’m insane because they have caught me on multiple occasions standing in my driveway with a selfie stick trying to figure out how to get my whole outfit into a picture. Living that blog lifestyle is embarrassing af sometimes y’all.

So, in that spirit, we are going to try to do monthly posts featuring ladies we know, or ladies we meet on the street, whose style we admire. One such lady is our dear Chicagoan friend AJ. This one has got some skill when it comes to dressing and particularly, accessorizing. Please join us below as we ask her some questions and take a leisurely stroll through her wardrobe.

When do you feel at your most attractive?

When I’ve had the time to take my time getting ready. I love experimenting with different makeup looks to reflect different moods or going-out destinations. Oddly enough, when it comes to actual outfit prep, I have found that outfits I throw together lackadaisically have been my favorite looks. And it’s always all about the accessories.

How would you describe this look?

I’d say this is all of my favorite looks in one outfit; the ’70s boots, the statement jewelry, and the mesh shirt business reminds me of the ’90s for no reason (was mesh big in the ’90s?). So I guess if you split the difference, it’s just your classic ’80s look.

What is your favorite thing about this outfit?

The shirt, for sure. The striped mesh just does it for me.

Are there any figures from culture, past or present, whose style you admire or have drawn from?

Stevie Nicks, late 60s/early 70s Natalie Wood, Studio 54, 70s Cher. I also love the silhouettes of Halston gowns from the 70s…not that I own any Halston. Also a big fan of Gia Carangi’s look. I was born in the wrong decade.

How would you describe this look?

I’d say this is like city-rodeo chic. I have a weird cactus obsession (cactus, not succulent, mind you) and pairing the shirt with the bold necklace just felt right. Yippee ki-yay, y’all!

What is your favorite thing about this outfit?

Oy, both the shirt and necklace are clutch here. But I think because cacti are so near and dear to my heart, I’d have to go with the shirt. I also love how oversized it is; it’s versatile as heck!

What is your favorite piece of clothing or jewelry that you own?

My favorite piece of jewelry is a tie! I love my engagement ring; it’s a vintage 80s cocktail ring that was originally sold in a store called Hennell of Bond Street in London. I call her Joan Collins. My other favorite piece of jewelry is a fork ring that I quietly stole from my mom while I was in high school. I think it’s from a 1970s craft fair. (Sorry, mom!)

How would you describe this look?

I am HUGE on accessories, moreso than clothing. My ideal outfit is something basic (e.g. the plain black turtleneck) paired with bold jewelry. And what feels bolder than wearing shark teeth, green fur, and a Neverending Story-inspired 60s medallion necklace? I don’t know either.

What is your favorite thing about this outfit?

Since I inherited the gold medallion necklace, I’ve basically been wearing it with everything. It’s badass. But I highly encourage jewelry fiends to visit Sweet and Spark (where the red/gold necklace is from) as they have a bunch of costume jewelry and you can sort by decade!

Tell us about something in your closet that you keep but never wear. What is it, why don’t you wear it, and why do you keep it?

I have a top hat that I just love so much but for some reason the fashion of Chicago feels stifling. The first time I went to LA, I felt like I had found my fashion niche. Out there, you can really let your freak flag fly. Here, it feels much more conservative; people don’t take as many fashion risks. I hold onto it hoping that eventually I’ll throw my fucks to the wind and actually wear it out.

What item of clothing are you still (or have you forever been) on the hunt for?

Orange suede platform boots!

How would you describe this look?

Here comes the mesh wagon! When I saw this white mesh masterpiece I knew I had to have it. It reminds me of a beautifully-decorated pastry, but probably does not taste good IRL.

What is your favorite thing about this outfit?

Again, the shirt because I’ve never found white mesh anything! Still trying to figure out the best pants to pair this with (open to suggestions!)

Why is this stuff important, if at all?

Great question, and this is really tough to answer. I feel like these outfits are me. These pieces are a literal reflection of what I love, so the clothing and jewelry picks almost feel like an extension of my interests and personality. So if you can find clothes and trinkets make you feel like an 11 on a scale from 1-10, then you fucking win.

Well, that’s it for us this week lovelies! You know where to find us til next time (FB & IG), so feel free to give us a shout if you feel so compelled. We are going to end this one on a high note, so we saved the best outfit for last. As always, we’ll C U Next Tuesday!

How would you describe this look?

I mean, I know I said my jewelry tends to make the statements, but this shirt is pretty powerful. And now that we’re living in the literal Twilight Zone, this shirt sadly feels more relevant than ever.

What is your favorite thing about this outfit?

I mean…
