Shopper Discretion Advised

Shopping smart is a skill. And it’s one that Taylor and I have only just recently begun to perfect. In college we would go to the mall and buy mountains of Forever 21 clothes that ended up never getting worn and ultimately being re-sold to Plato’s Closet and Rag-O-Rama so we’d have money to buy cigs and Chipotle.

Now we’re a bit more discerning with what we’re willing to spend our money on. Maybe it’s because we don’t smoke or eat Chipotle (often) anymore, but it’s likely more due to the fact that we’re more aware of what we do and don’t like, what we will and won’t wear, and what is or isn’t worth our cash.

Obviously we’re both still guilty of buying and hanging on to shit that we have no business buying or hanging on to, but it’s a learning process and nobody’s perfect, YOU KNOW? So, for this week’s post, we wanted to bring you guys along on a journey in self awareness and show you everything we tried on at our most recent trip to the mall, what we did and didn’t end up buying, and why.

P.S. All the pics are linked to their online stores. Just because they didn’t work for us, doesn’t mean they won’t work for you! 😘

LC: What I didn’t buy

hmprod (1)

What attracted me to it: It’s black. And it has cutouts.

Why I didn’t buy it: The placement of the cutouts was weird. They cut too far in on the chest, and if I hadn’t been wearing a bra when I tried it on, my nips would have been directly underneath them. Obviously I would have worn a bra with it in real life anyway, but even so it looked and felt awkward af on me.

What attracted me to it: I’m a sucker for an oversized sweater. Avian element? EVEN BETTER.

Why I didn’t buy it: The sleeves were abnormally long on me. Like, they went down to my knees. I could just see myself this winter looking at this in my dresser drawer every day, wanting to wear it and then putting it on and immediately taking it back off because I wouldn’t know how to handle the orangutan sleeve situation.

What attracted me to it: I don’t wear a ton of skirts, but I really enjoy looking at them and trying them on for some reason.

Why I didn’t buy it: I couldn’t think of a single occasion on which I would ever wear it, nor could I think of any top that I already own that I would wear with it.

What attracted me to it: It’s shiny, sheer, and it has planets on it.

Why I didn’t buy it: I love the idea of shiny clothes in theory, but not so much in practice. I always put them on and then instantly feel too flashy. I knew I would never wear it.

What attracted me to it: The mod aesthetic and I had a very intense relationship in college, so there’s a part of me that will always be attracted to anything that looks like something that Twiggy would have worn.

Why I didn’t buy it: Mod aesthetic is not my current aesthetic, and it hasn’t been for years. I loved looking at it, but when I put it on it felt like college me, not now me.

What attracted me to it: God, I love a dark floral. Can’t get enough of that shit.

Why I didn’t buy it: It was scratchy as hell, and my love of dark florals does not outweigh my love of my clothing not ripping my skin off.

What attracted me to it: It looked real badass the way it was styled on the mannequin in the store. And then when I noticed that it was a bodysuit I almost peed my pants.

Why I didn’t buy it: If it had been any other color I would have bought it, but this is the exact color of my skin and it just kind of grossed me out. Like when all the food on your plate is the same color. So gross.

What attracted me to it: Again with the dark florals.

Why I didn’t buy it: I’m just not a romantic dresser, and I need to come to terms with that. I was going to buy this for my upcoming trip to Paris because it seemed like it would look suuuper good against the backdrop of a Parisian cafe, which it would. And then I realized that I would literally never wear it again, and probably wouldn’t even wear it while in Paris.

LC: What I did buy

What attracted me to it: Basic is beautiful, y’all.

Why I bought it: I will wear it a million times.

Screen Shot 2017-08-07 at 12.47.04 PM

What attracted me to it: Is there anything that’s not attractive about black jeans, really?

Why I bought it: Again, I will get so much wear out of these. And they were only $29 wtf.

Screen Shot 2017-08-07 at 12.47.54 PM

What attracted me to it: Love me some minimalist jewelry. And I just thought about all the basic shirts that I own that I could wear it with.

Why I bought it: See above.

TFO: What I didn’t buy

Claressa Puff Tulip Sleeve Stripe Tee- Black/White

What attracted me to it: I AM OBSESSED WITH GIANT SLEEVES right now. And I own like a million black and white striped shirts.

Why I didn’t buy it: It was too long. If it had been cropped, it would’ve 100% come home with me, but it looked weird tucked in and I don’t like shirts going past my waistband.

Elora Cupro Tier Ruffle Sleeve Tee-Black

What attracted me to it:  Again with the giant sleeves! Also it’s made out of that weird brushed cotton/synthetic hybrid that’s everywhere right now, and which is so silky and comfortable. Also also, I always think I love ruffles on the hanger.

Why I didn’t buy it: The ruffles. And it made my shoulders look round(er than they already are).

What attracted me to it: My whole mom aesthetic is really having a cultural moment right now, and the jeans are one of my favorite things. This style looks so loose and relaxed.

Why I didn’t buy it: Legs were slightly too wide, and the overall effect was less “loose and relaxed” and more “dumpy af.”

What attracted me to it: In addition to Dem Sleeves, this is off the shoulder and menswear-inspired, two more of my favorite things.

Why I didn’t buy it: I came SO CLOSE. I really liked this top. But ultimately I felt like it was ever so slightly too preppy to make it into heavy rotation, so I passed. It’s also pretty similar in spirit to the top from this post, and I’m trying to keep my wardrobe relatively pared down.

What attracted me to it: See above.

Why I didn’t buy it: This was very crisp and cool, but a little too dressy to wear for, like, anything in my life. I hang out with a three-year-old all day, you know?

What attracted me to this: Relaxed fit AND embroidery? Yes, please!

Why I didn’t buy it: These would have been perfect if they weren’t GOD DAMN LOW RISE. Why do low-rise jeans still exist? They’re awful. Fortunately, I saw when combing Zara for images for this post that there are many variations upon this theme on their website that I didn’t see in the store, so maybe I’ll order a different pair.

What attracted me to it: Um, it’s a T-shirt with a space/celestial bodies theme. SOLD.

Why I didn’t buy it: Except not, because this thing was laughably enormous. I love the idea of oversized T-shirts so much, but they look awful on me. And even for something that was supposed to be oversized, this was HUGE. I normally wear a large; I tried on a medium because that was the only size they had, and it SWALLOWED me.

What attracted me to it: TEXTURE. I’m like a magpie but instead of shiny things, I like textured things.

Why I didn’t buy it: It was overall not a great cut for me, and also I don’t actually wear colors or like arts and craftsy things, so I’m not even sure why I brought it into the dressing room.

TFO: What I did buy

I didn’t buy anything at the mall on Saturday, but I did go into TJMaxx the next day looking for candles and walked out with…

What attracted me to it: It’s black, it’s got big sleeves, and it’s off-the-shoulder. YUSSSSS.

Why I bought it: I could instantly imagine several ways I could wear it, both dressed up and dressed down, and it was fifteen dollars. I’m wearing it tomorrow. I love it.

That’s it for us this week, babes! What are your rules for shopping? Do you have any? We want to hear from yooooooouuuuuu! Thanks for reading, and we’ll C U Next Tuesday.
